Martin Owens, a US gaming lawyer and a well known author declared that Internet gambling in the U.S. is not dead despite the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006 as there will be increased demand by individual states for involvement in the activity and the revenues it can raise.

Martin Owens was speaking in Barcelona, Spain during the 6th annual European Interactive Gaming Congress And Expo and went over the unique nature of state versus Federal law in the United States. He detailed the complexities and inconsistencies of the law.

“Internet gambling is not dead in America,” said Owens.

Edward Leyden, The President of the Interactive Media, Entertainment and Gaming Association (IMEGA), also spoke at this event in Spain and claimed that his organization represented the wide interests of the Internet Casino industry. He proclaimed that adults have the fundamental right to engage in entertainment that may include internet gambling and continued to read a summary of his organization’s activities to date.

Edward Leyden also praised Judge Mary Cooper, who is currently residing over a case IMEGA brought against the US Department Of Justice demanding a restraining order on the implementation of UIGEA, and stated that she was ‘an erudite, fair and technology oriented official with conscientious attention to detail’.

Leyden stated “Following the hearing last week and without presuming to prejudge the issue, we came away feeling very confident in a fair and knowledgeable result from Judge Cooper.” .
