EU presses U.S. to change anti internet casino law

European Union's official declared earlier this week that the U.S. must change an internet casino anti gambling law that discriminates against European companies by preventing them from offering services to online casino US clients.

Prior to discussing the issue with U.S.officials. EU Trade Commissioner, told reporters that "What we need to see is a change in U.S. legislation that removes that discrimination against EU operators,"

"It's not in the interest of American consumers to have good responsible competitors in this market excluded by regulatory mechanisms."

The European Union and other trading partners have been demanding compensation for damages from United States over law makers' decision to ban internet casinos services from the American market, reopening commitments made by the U.S. as part of the 1994 world trade agreement.

The United States took that step after the WHO (World Trade Organization) ruled in a case brought by Antigua and Barbuda against the United states.

The U.S. Congress has since passed a wider internet gambling ban.

European internet gambling firms have urged the bloc to seek as much as $100 billion in compensation for having the U.S. close its market to foreign competition.

"When a member of the WTO defaults on its commitments, compensation is due. That's the case of online gambling," claimed the European Union's official.

"We're in talks about the magnitude of that compensation. I think what we're asking for is reasonable and realistic. The numbers aren't quite as large as has been advertised, but they need to be substantial."

The official said he would talk on Thursday with the chairman of the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee, about his bill to roll back the internet gambling ban.
