How To Play Baccarat

Baccarat – a card game that can be traced back to the 15the century – is one that is found in brick and mortar casinos and online casinos the world over. There three variations of the game, punco banco or North American baccarat, Chemin de Far, and baccarat banque. Chemin de Fer is the rarest form of baccarat and most players will not find it in a casino or online gambling room. An interesting side note here is that in Ian Flemings James Bond written series, banque baccarat is the secret agent’s game of choice. It was changed in the most recent movie to Texas Hold’Em Poker.

Similar to blackjack in its game play between the dealer and the ‘punter’ or player, other punters can make bets on who will win the hand between the first player and the dealer. Chemin de Fer and banque do offer more wagering choices during the game, and unlike punto banco, these versions require a high degree of skill to play. Luck of the draw is always in effect and everyone can win or lose their bets. Three types of bets can be made in the game: the banker, the player, and the tie.

Baccarat is scored based on the ranking of the cards. Ten is usually counted as a zero, 2 through 9 at face values and the face cards as 10. The object of the game is to score ten points or less without going over the deal’s cards. Some variations count the ten cards differently and if the ten is combined with another card, say a two, the ten is counted as 1 point, giving the player a total of 3. Knowing how to count the dealt cards is actually the trickiest part of playing baccarat. When you play it live at a casino, make sure you understand the house rules regarding how the ten and face cards are valued.
